WellStar needs your help in making our community aware of the signs of stroke!
Stroke strikes FAST and you should too! Many people do not know that being able to recognize and respond to stroke symptoms can save lives. Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the United States and too often ends in life-long assisted living or nursing care.
A stroke or "brain attack" occurs when an artery is blocked or when blood vessels break. Stroke should be treated as an emergency, because every minute matters.
Think You're Seeing Signs of Stroke? Call 9-1-1 Immediately!
Think F.A.S.T. is an easy way to remember the sudden signs of stroke. When you can spot the signs, you need to call 9-1-1 fast:
- Face Drooping - Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the smile uneven?
- Arm Weakness - Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
- Speech Difficulty - Is the person unable to speak? Is speech slurred or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like "The sky is blue." Is the sentence repeated correctly?
- Time To Call 9-1-1 - If someone shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 9-1-1 and get the person to the hospital immediately. Be sure to check the time so you'll know when the first symptoms appeared.
